France welcomes the law regarding work organization adopted by the Burmese Parliament and promulgated by President Thein Sein. This law recognizes the Burmese people’s right to strike and be part of unions freely. It illustrates the authorities’ willingness to make progress with regards to civil liberties. We will be attentive to its application.

This reform follows last week’s amnesty of between 200 and 250 political prisoners, according to the latest estimates. France invites the Burmese government to continue this process without further delay by releasing, without condition, all prisoners of conscience.

France welcomes the dialogue established between President Thein Sein and Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as negotiations between the government and ethnic groups. We hope these efforts will soon produce tangible results.

In this context, France would like to see reflection undertaken within the international community, and particularly the European Union, to consider, in a constructive spirit, the possible responses to the developments underway in Burma.
